In what only could be described as a monumental TEAM victory last night in Buchanon Gymnasium, Hempfield stormed their way to victory over perennial LL Section 1 kingpin Solanco, 40 to 39! This was the first LL Section 1 loss for the Golden Mules since 2009, and puts the Black Knights in the drivers seat for their first LL Section title since 2005.
In a blind draw, the match started at 220 pounds, and the chess match between two of the longest tenured and successful coaches in the LL League began! Joey Goodhart stepped out on the mat and kept his undefeated season intact, by making quick work of his opponent, and flattening him to the mat early in the first period to set the tone of the evening, that Hempfield came to play tonight!
At 113, Rueben Sanchez was inserted into the line-up, and even though he succumbed to Taylor Morrison by a score of 11-2, by not getting pinned or tech- falled, the Hempfield sophomore kept the match from getting out of hand. Bumping up to 120 pounds, Sophomore Aidyn Miller could not hold onto an early 4 to 1 lead, and lost by a tech-fall to Alex Proffitt. Once again, the points saved by Miller and Sanchez in defeat, breathed life into the Black Knights that a comeback was possible tonight! Falling behind 27 to 6, and sandwiched between 3 Solanco pins, was a stirring performance by Junior David Good, who bumped up 2 weight classes to 132, and broke open a close match with Jeff Davis, by catching him on his back, and pinning him in the second period. With the score now up to 39 to 12, the fans and coaches began the mental math exercises needed to determine if it were even possible to catch the Mules going into the 152 pound weight class. Sophomore Tyler Reber started making believers out of the packed house of wrestling fans and media, and Hempfield wrestling alumni, as he tossed his opponent onto his back to secure the 3rd period fall for the Knights. At 160, Sophomore Alex Gainer used the same formula to pin Senior Karson Beane in the 3rd period as well, that would be taking a close match, and in an instant turning it into a Fall. Next man up was Junior Brady Mathias at 170 pounds, and chose not be a copy cat, and jumped out to an early lead, and continued his offensive onslaught throughout all 3 periods to secure the much needed major victory, 16 to 8, and picjk up the valuable extra team point for the Black Knights. The stage was set for Junior Jordan Ortiz at 182, and he did not disappoint, securing the Fall quickly in the first period to pull the Black Knights to within 5 points, with one last match on the docket. Tommy Bennett strolled onto the mat needing to pin his opponent, to complete this improbable comeback. He put his opponent on his back for what seemed like the entire match, but could not secure the first period pin. Up 5 to 0, Tommy quickly escaped, and working to put his opponent away, got a little sloppy and to the dismay of the Hempfield faithful, got caught in a headlock by Shane Devoe in the second period. Tommy fought valiantly off his back, and reversed Devoe almost right to his back, and this time held him there for the pin in the second period, setting off jubilation and applause from all the fans who were privileged to watch such a great high school wrestling match! Congratulations to all Hempfield wrestlers and coaches on their big win last night!
