Hempfield Continues March Toward 1st Section Title Since 2005

Hempfield 55, McCaskey 15

Hempfield continued it’s march toward their first Section 1 wrestling title since 2005, by destroying the McCaskey Red Tornado, 55 – 15. The Knights finished up a very busy week of wrestling, by sweeping all 3 matches. The Black Knights remained undefeated in Section 1 action, at 5 – 0, and improved their overall record for the season, to 13-3. Sophomores Tyler Reber, at 152, and Alex Gainer, at 160, got the Knights on the scoreboard early and often in their two matches. Tyler does not seem happy unless he scores in double digits, and tonight was no exception, as he hung up a 12 spot, to win his match. Gainer, one upped Reber, as he scored 19 points on his opponent and won 19-6. Following a forfeit given to Donovan Santana, Hempfield reeled off 4 consecutive first period pins, by Brady Mathias, at 182, Jordan Ortiz, at 195, Tommy Bennett, at 220, and Joey Goodhart, at HWT. When Brandon Hartman followed up with a pin of his own at 106, the final result was safe at hand for the Knights. Rueben Sanchez won a close 6-5 match at 113. David Good at 126 also had a first period pin. The final margin of victory were provided by freshman, Luke Granbois, as he churned out a nice 10-5 victory.

All that stands between the Knights and their first Section 1 title since 2005, is a showdown with their arch rival Manheim Township in their “ARENA”, next Wednesday, January 22nd at 7 pm. They are a very talented team, and our boys will need to continue this excellent stretch of wrestling they have shown us so far this year. They seem to be peaking at the right time, as after the Manheim Township match they have the LL League Championships coming up at Garden Spot next Friday and Saturday, which will determine individual champions at each weight class among the 23 teams in our league. It is always a tremendous test!
