Black Knights Upended by Manheim Township 39-32

Manheim Township 39, Hempfield 32

The recipe that has worked so well for the Black Knights this season, came up just short against Manheim Township last night.  Brandon Hartman, 106, and Rueben Sanchez, 113, got the team off on the right foot, by pinning both of their opponents, giving the Black Knights a quick 12-0 lead. Manheim Township then  proceeded to reel off 7 consecutive wins in the middle of the line-up, and that proved to be too much of a deficit to overcome for the Black Knights. There were 2 or 3 expected  toss-up matches among those 7 wins, but unlike the matches against Penn Manor and Solanco, where we were able to pull off victories in those matches, last night Manheim Township had the edge in those matches and were able to come out victorious in the match. Hempfield fought back valiantly by winning 4 of the last 5 matches contested, but it was not quite enough to pull off the victory. This team still earned it’s first Section 1  Dual meet co-championship since the 2005 season. Their record stands at 13-4 for the year, and they will find out Sunday afternoon if they qualify for the District 3 team Championships for the first time in 4 years.
Also beginning this afternoon at Garden Spot High School, the team will compete in the  Lancaster Lebanon Individual tournament, which is always a good  measure of how the boys will perform in the postseason. The top 4 seeds are out this morning and Hempfield has 5 boys seeded, David Good, 1st at 120, Brady Mathias, 3rd at 170, Jordan Ortiz, 3rd at 182, Tommy Bennett, 2nd at 195, and Joey Goodhart, 1st at 220.
