Bennett, Goodhart Lead Hempfield at Sectionals

And the Seniors Shall Lead Them!

Led by their two Senior Co-Captains, Tommy Bennett and Joey Goodhart, the Black Knights finished 4th as a team at last night’s Sectional tournament. Bennett, at 195, finished off his fantastic run  by pinning Cameron Eisenhauer of Ephrata at the 1:12 mark of the first period, and thereby earning him the top spot on the podium.  In a much anticipated match-up of two of the best Heavyweights in the State, Goodhart fell to the 3x reigning State Champion from Solanco, Thomas Haines by a regular decision, 11 to 4. Those of you who follow our sport, realize the significance of that accomplishment, as Haines holds or will hold every Lancaster County record, be it pins, wins, or Individual State Championships. Haines was rewarded for his victory over last years Outstanding Wrestler award, by picking up the 2014 version of the Outstanding Wrestler Award. Joining the two seniors in the Sectional Finals were Aidyn Miller at 113, and Jordan Ortiz, at 182. Miller fell to top-seeded, Jose Vera from McCaskey, by a 8-2 decision, while Ortiz likewise fell to the top-seeded wrestler at his weight class of 182, John Shorter from Manheim Township, via a fall at the 3:24 mark. Rounding out the contingent which will travel to the Hershey Park Arena this week for the District 3 tournament, is David Good, at 120 pounds. After suffering a close and controversial semi-final loss to the eventual champion from Warwick, Josh Charles, 5-3, he stormed his way back to qualify for the trip to Hershey, by avenging his loss to Alex Proffitt of Solanco in the LL League finals two weeks ago, by edging the top-seeded Golden Mule Senior this time by a 4-3 margin. Hempfield had two other wrestlers competing for the 3rd place spot at their weights last night as well. At 106, Brandon Hartman, lost a nail-biter to 31 match winner, Chris Morales, of CV, 6-5. And at 160 pounds, fellow sophomore, Alex Gainer, likewise fell to 30 match winner , Jack Habowski, of LS, by a fall.  Overall a fantastic effort by the team as they finished just a point in a half behind 3rd place Penn Manor in the team standings. Congrats and Good Luck this Friday afternoon at the Hershey park Arena for the District 3 tournament!
