Goodhart Ends HS Career on PIAA Podium – State Tournament Recap

Joey Goodhart capped off his brilliant High School career by defeating Zeynul Zaynullayev, from Mt. Lebanon, from the strong Western Pa District 7 contingency, by a score of 5-2. The win placed Goodhart in 7th Place at Hwt. and insured his place on the PIAA AAA State Championship Podium he has dreamed about since he joined our great sport as 4th grader in Hempfield’s Elementary program. His senior season record stood at 38-5, as he went 3 an 2 at the Giant Center.  He lost a hard fought 6-2 decision to eventual Finalists Pat Finn from Pottsgrove. He won his first two consolation matches, the first against Stephen Turchik from Plum, 3-2, next was a 6-0 victory over Brandon Lance from Nazareth. He then lost a close 4-2 decision to Tracey Green from Methacton, and then won his last match against Zaynullalev.

Tommy Bennett, at 195,  ran into some tough obstacles as he took to the Giant Center floor for the first time on Thursday afternoon against Cole Macek from Montour HS, also from the District 7 out of the Pittsburgh area. Macek came in undefeated and a Regional Champion, and looked every bit the part as he topped Bennett 15-8. In the consolation match wrestled another strong Northwestern  Pa. wrestler from General McLane High School, Chris Laird. Trailing 2 to 1 after the first period, Bennett fought valiantly for points, but came up short at the end by a 10-4 count. Bennett’s season record was 36-8. Both these young men demonstrate excellent leadership qualities, and both excel in the classroom and on the mats, and in my opinion may be two of the all-time best tandem of Big Men that Jude has ever had the opportunity to coach! Congratulations on your excellent careers guys, and best of luck in your future endeavors at Drexel and American University, respectively!
